Diary of a Strong Mom: August

What!

Why yes, that is a sub 20min 2 miles. The first time I’ve done that in, well, ever. At least that I’ve been tracking. I am well on track to run my 3.1 miles in sub 31 minutes. Hell, I could have slowly jogged the rest of the last mile and still hit my goal.

So of course, the competitive side of me wants to try to hit sub 30min. My fastest 5k ever was 30min and change, so that would be an epic PR for me. And even more empowering because I weigh the most now (outside of pregnancy) that I’ve weighed in well over 15 years. So to be able to PR my 5k time right now? Yeah, that’ll be the best birthday present to myself.

Aside from running, I’ve also taken up a MMA (Mixed Martial Arts aka Fighting 101) class three times a week. It was largely in response to all the anger and frustration that I’ve felt with the news and a certain president lately, but it was also a present to myself to help me Get the Fuck Out of the House. I work at home and, while this is absolutely amazing and gives me time to work out and write, it’s also incredibly isolating.

So now three times a week, I help get the baby into bed, pull on some shorts, and head 2min down the road to a studio where I’ve been learning how to kick, block, grapple, and punch. It’s a lot of fun, except I somehow pinched a nerve the first week and so had to ditch the last two classes. But I’ll be back tonight. Just, maybe, I’ll take it a little easier.

And for reading all that you get ONE BABY PHOTO because tomorrow she will be 10 months and then you will get ALL THE BABY PHOTOS.

Strong Mom & Blueberries

july-88

First, blueberries.

Ever since I knew we’d be moving to Michigan, I was excited about picking berries. AZ is great for a lot of things – hiking, sunsets, bat watching – but its produce is abysmal. Still, we made the 2 hour trek out to the orchards every fall just to pick apples and pretend it wasn’t 90+ degrees.

July hit and with it the realization that, well hot beans, summer ain’t gonna be around much longer. Last year the warm weather stretched well into October, but I know the north is fickle and there’s no guarantee we won’t get an early frost this year. Plus, berries are only in season for a few short weeks (see: weekends). So we’d better hop on it.

We hit up a patch that was supposed to be an hour away, but due to random construction, ended up being two hours. By the time we got there, the clear day the weather forecasters had promised had become cloudy and misty. We pulled into a muddy parking lot still speckled with other cars and figured we wouldn’t melt and, well, it was better than a hot, humid day.

july-92

Aside from my shoes getting drenched, it was perfect. We took turns holding Lady Jr & an umbrella and picking blueberries. It misted and rained and misted again. There were a few mosquitoes, but far fewer than there could have been.

The blueberries were perfect. Lady Jr kept stretching for the leaves, so I guided her to a clump of blueberries and she pulled one off and ate it. Then she ate another one. And another. She just kept plucking blueberries and eating them and I was so amazed I didn’t stop her. In hindsight, I should have, because she ended up puking blueberries all over my shirt. Whoops.

Chubby baby arm

Oh well. I bundled her back to the car, cleaned us both off, then put her in the carrier. Together we walked up and down the rows of blueberries and she fell asleep with her head back and her arms crossed under her chin.

Two hours later we were home again and I was rinsing off the blueberries (nine pounds!!). I offered one to her, but apparently it wasn’t fresh enough. Fair.

july-89

And now, a strong mom update, because finding time to update in general has been tough, y’all. Mostly I just wanted to say

I ran a 9:13 mile! Aaah!

I haven’t run a sub 10min mile in easily 2 years. I am not a speedy person. I am a lifter and I am tall and I am big. So getting that close to 9min is a big achievement. Now to hit my goal of 3.1 miles in 31min, I just have to do that twice over. Considering I had to warm up with a 10.50min pace and then had to walk for a bit after, I’m still a ways off, but…

That’s what goals are all about, right? Pushing your limits and being surprised at what happens.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to stuff my face with blueberries.

Seven Weeks

31287146046_90917642f0_z

This last week has included the lowest lows and the highest highs so far. I think I’m suffering from whiplash.

We went from inconsolable screaming and the depths of sleep dep hell to a baby who smiles and babbles and is – for the most part – content during the day.

Nights are still another thing.

But I can see the light ahead and as long as I get a modicum of uninterrupted sleep, everything is okay.

Lady Jr:

Smiles, coos, laughs. Made eye contact for the first time. Likes to sit in my lap and look around. Also likes to sit in the high chair my brother got us and watch us cook. Also loooves to be in the carrier, looking around. We had a family photo session while my brother and sis-in-law were in town and I was hoping Lady Jr would just sleep through it instead of crying, but she surprised us all by not only being awake, but being content.

Still having gas troubles. It subsided for a few days, but came back again. It doesn’t seem as bad, but the poor thing just seems to be made of farts sometimes.

Still having trouble getting her to sleep in the evenings. I suspect we’re just going about it all wrong. One time last week she went down at 7.30 and stayed down, but of course I can’t remember what we did differently that day. Last night she screamed and fussed until 11. I don’t mind waking up with her every 3 hours throughout the night at this point – I just want to figure out how we can avoid a four hour fussathon.

She is better about sleep, slowly. She needs the bouncer to be on to fall asleep, but once asleep she’ll stay stay that way even when it turns off – but only at night. A few times she’s even fallen asleep on her own in the bouncer if we put her in sleepy, which is awesome. Now we’re working on transitioning her to her box and – eventually – her crib. Just now I got her to fall asleep in her box, even though she didn’t stay asleep long. But it’s all progress.

Speck:

From the depths of sleep dep hell I have ascended to… normalcy. Or what passes as normalcy these days. Still frustrated when I can’t get anything else done except sleep and take care of the baby. Still anxious about this big project due at the end of January. Still wish I could just sleep for three hours straight.

But I’m doing better and as long as I take a deep breath and put Lady Jr in her carrier and get something – anything done – I feel okay.

Physically, I’m still walking 3+ miles most days and my OB cleared me for all activity last week, so I’ve thrown in a lifting session or two for mental health. They’re light and slow and still I feel like I’ve lost a lot of strength. I’m going to keep it at 2 or less sessions per week until three months and avoid going too heavy. This is just to get back to doing something that makes me happy, not to lose weight or rebuild strength.

Speaking of weight, I feel like I dropped a lot in the first two weeks and then just stopped. I hadn’t been thinking about it – it’s not a priority when you’re too exhausted to move – but I’ve become increasingly self conscious about my lingering pudge and round face. Only a few of my loosest skirts fit and most of my shirts are super tight – although that’s probably because of these giant boobs, honestly. Nothing to do for it yet, except try not to let it bother me.

Dr Lady:

Watching her struggle with work/baby/life balance has made me nervous to go back to work myself, even part time. There are just not enough hours in the day. The long weekend helped a lot, letting her bond with baby again, but she’s had a rough time feeling like an equal part of the team. It doesn’t help that the time she gets home in the evening is generally when Lady Jr is gearing up for a fussathon.

We thought that letting her have Lady Jr while I slept in the evenings would be best, but then a) I don’t really see my wife and b) my wife, tired from working all day, gets the exquisite joy of calming an inconsolable baby by herself. Not exactly fair. So we’re tag-teaming again.

Her science is going, when it can. It’s hard to get much done when she’s only there for five or six hours, but she’s starting to be able to be there longer some days.

I’m sure we’ll find balance eventually. Sleep first.

Lady Jr is a real human being:
Lady Jr

I gained 32 pounds.

I went up two cup sizes and two band sizes.

I went up one shoe size (arguably half a size, but we’ll see).

I didn’t get stretch marks.

I never threw up (okay once in my mouth a little).

I went from squatting 165# to 45#.

I only had a few cravings in the first trimester, the weirdest of which was fried chicken wings.

My belly button stayed in, albeit stretched.

My wedding ring came off around 30 weeks.

Highest highs: The return of a feeling of normalcy in the second trimester.

Lowest lows: The unflagging nausea and fatigue in the first trimester.

Would I do it again? Hell no. Just don’t ask a year from now, kay?

Honestly, I had a really good, lucky pregnancy. There were some hard parts, but they could (usually) be measured in days. I had a fast and safe, if insane, labor. No complications, no high blood pressure, no GD – I am counting all my lucky stars and thanking the universe for each one.

And now for the next adventure: parenthood.

Lady Jr is just growing until she becomes fierce like a red panda:

Overall: I’m getting really good at existing while pregnant. I’ve got all the moves down – how to pick things up off the ground, how to get out of bed, how to stand up from the floor, how to sleep. I think that lends itself to the feeling that I’m just gonna be pregnant forever.

But willing or not, Lady Jr’s got no more than two weeks left. During my last OB appointment, the doctor clarified their position on inductions – that they would schedule one after 41 weeks if I want, but one would be necessary after 42 weeks. I don’t want to go past 42 weeks for a dozen reasons – big baby, slowing placenta, possible meconium ingestion, let alone my own discomfort – and Dr Lady is weary about a baby on her birthday, so we talked and decided that next doc visit, we’d go ahead and schedule an induction for the 19th. I really really don’t wanna, and I hope my intuition is right that it’ll be sometime this week, but it’s also reassuring to have an end date planned.

I’m also trying to reassure myself with the reminder that so far, this pregnancy has been pretty average. I’m not special, there haven’t been any weird complications, I’ve experienced a normal amount of discomfort and frustration, so I’m going to project out along that theme. Most first time moms deliver between 40+3 and 41+1, so I probably will, too.

So I’ve got at least until Thursday to chill and do whatever I want. There are a few things around the house to do and I’ve got a ton of books and the weather is lovely for walking, even if I can’t go very far. I’m not going to hurry, because I’ve got tons of time. I’m also going to have a special day today, since it’s my due date. Slow, chill, relaxed. Pretend I’m on vacation and try to ignore the increasingly painful cramps.

Plenty. Of. Time.

Pre-Labor Bingo:

So far we’ve got:

  • Nigh constant Braxton Hicks.
  • Occasional mild, period-like cramps.
  • Lots of mucus.
  • Increased pressure in my pelvis.
  • Lower back ache.
  • Overall feeling like I’m going to start my period tomorrow.
  • So much cramps, possibly even contractions?
  • Increased appetite.

So I think I’ve been having (practice? prodromal?) contractions, but since everybody and their mother says “oh, you’ll know it when you do,” I’m not 100% sure. They’re different from the Braxton Hicks in that they start as a cramp and then spread upwards, sometimes to my back. I wouldn’t quite call them painful, but they’re not pleasant, either. A few have been pretty intense, but they haven’t been regular or increasing in intensity, so obviously not labor.

Preparations for Lady Jr: Little things here and there. The crib has been firmly secured in the side-car manner, complete with bungee cords. We made sure the furnace works (well and also it dropped down to 36 degrees the last two nights so). Lady cut up some blankets for wipes. I mowed the lawn, possibly for the last time this season. Made some apple sauce and cooked another pumpkin so we have all the pumpkin puree in the freezer. Acquired some black-out curtains for the bedroom. Filled my Shuffle up with music.

Idk what else to do, aside from the basic things like vacuuming, laundry, cleaning. We’re as set as we can be without knowing anything about Lady Jr’s temperament and preferences.

Exercise: Walking, although it’s still on and off uncomfortable. Lady Jr is sitting on all the important bits down there, which, uh, is not pleasant. Mowing the lawn counts, right?

Appointments: One last Thursday.

Met the only male doc in the practice and he was surprisingly adorable. I normally don’t like male docs, especially male OBs, but he’s all right.

Everything looked fine. Had the chat about inductions. Had the chat about when to go to the hospital. I declined a cervix check because I didn’t want to get my hopes up and/or be disappointed. Lady Jr seems pretty low, which is good.

Next appointment is Wednesday, where they’ll do a non-stress test, an ultrasound, and probably check my cervix.

Dr Lady: She went in to the podiatrist on Thursday to get her ingrown toenail checked out and they were like, “hey we have a cancellation want to get this fixed right now?” So she had minor foot surgery and they removed the part of the toenail that wasn’t behaving and now she’s in recovery mode. She’s been soaking and resting it and is already in a lot less pain, so I have hope that she’ll be near 100% recovered by Thursday. And then – omg – maybe she will finally be done with foot problems.

Otherwise she’s stressed and impatient and every time I mention I’m having cramps or BH or what have you, she can’t help but get a little excited. And I’m like, dude this could go on for a long time, and she’s like, I knooooow but I can’t help it.

I love her.

I don’t know who at Ovia is sniffing glue, but according to them Lady Jr is the size of a house cat, variety American Shorthair. Yeah:

No.

Overall: On the one hand, I know that it’s substantially more likely that Lady Jr will come after 40 weeks. On the other hand I’m 39 weeks and IT IS A THING THAT COULD HAPPEN.

I 100% understand why people start going a tad bit crazy towards the end of pregnancy.

That said, I feel fine. We’ve been ready for this baby since 36 weeks and now I’m checking my watch and wondering if she’ll be on time or fashionably late. I’m still working. I’m still mowing the lawn and doing the dishes and acting like a normal human being.

I’m also in a weird bit of denial. It’s hard to believe there is a legit baby in me and even harder to believe that baby will be coming out. She even wiggles and moves and stretches and I’m still like “…yup…weird stomach doing weird things.”

Preparations for Lady Jr: We swung by and officially put our name on the waitlist for childcare this morning. On the one hand, I’m relieved to know we’ll have a place for her that’s nearby and pretty awesome. On the other hand, it breaks my heart a little that we have to do all this in the first place. I’m a little (see: a lot) jealous of other countries where mothers get at least six months off, but I can’t even think about asking for that in a country where three months is seen as generous and I haven’t even been with this company over a year. That’s a whole ‘nother rant though.

We also hit up Costco this weekend, stocked up on basic supplies (toilet paper, soap, etc), and froze some breakfast sandwiches. We went searching for a ring carrier at the second hand stores in our area and, when we found nothing, ended up ordering one online. And we went for a lot of loooong walks. Sun out, sixty degrees – it was lovely.

Exercise: Walking. Cleaning. A little bit of lifting – if you can call throwing an empty barbell around lifting. I’ve been doing more kettlebell swings to help keep my hips strong. I’ve also continued air squats when I remember and just keep stretching when I have breaks. The change in weather has been absolute bliss, because I can finally go outside and feel comfortable and not get eaten by a swarm of mosquitoes, so I’ve been taking a number of smaller walks throughout the day.

Appointments: One last Thursday.

Cool Story Bro time: Omg my wife. So, I got my GBS results back and I’m negative (yaaay), but Dr Lady was a little disappointed. She admitted to me (and the doc) that if I had been positive, she would have asked for a culture to try and grow in the lab. The doc kind of looked at her for a moment, then promised that – one scientist to another – if she (the doc – who also happens to be pregnant) turns out to be positive for GBS, she will totally call Dr Lady up and offer her a culture. Which made Dr Lady’s day. And that’s the story of how my wife and my OB are the bestest buds now.

Otherwise everything is still measuring fine. I have another appointment this Thursday, then one next Wednesday if Lady Jr hasn’t made her exit by then. I’m starting to think she won’t.

Dr Lady: Antsy to meet Lady Jr. Getting into that anxious it-could-be-any-time phase, which is difficult in the lab because most of her experiments are two-dayers, so she has to be able to plan ahead. She’s also super excited about taking two weeks off and spending it with just me and Lady Jr.

According to some doctors, Lady Jr is full term. According to others, she needs to wait another week. I’m going to encourage her to stay put for at least another week, even though she’s now the size of a Pomeranian (!?):

Overall: I feel like once I got hit by the full-size bus that is the 3rd trimester around 34-35 weeks, it hasn’t gotten much worse. I’ve learned to cope with the discomfort and so, even though I’m still limited, having trouble eating, and sometimes need to sit for 20min and catch my breath from just existing, it’s all quite bearable.

Last week at work was rough, but we pushed hard and finished the betas on both big projects with room to breathe. Sometime this week we’ll get the revisions back and done, then turn in the final versions. I’m more than a little relieved. Next big project is due in a month, but I’ll be able to help a bit over the coming week (or two) and then I’m confident my coworker can handle the rest.

I also got some good news in another part of my life that I’ve been sorely neglecting. Whether or not that pans out into shareable news, we’ll see in (again) the coming weeks. This is both the worst and best time to receive any news on that, because on the one hand, I have zero emotional energy or excitement, but on the other hand, at least I won’t be refreshing my email every three seconds until I hear something.

Pre-Labor Bingo: At this point I’ve pretty much experienced all the fun bits of pregnancy that I’m gonna experience and now my body is segueing into labor mode. From what I’ve read, pre-labor is the body ramping up for the Real Deal and can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. So nothing means anything but every little thing could mean something! Let’s go crazy!!

So far we’ve got:

  • Nigh constant Braxton Hicks.
  • Occasional mild, period-like cramps.
  • Lots of mucus.
  • Increased pressure in my pelvis. Baby doesn’t appear to have dropped, but she’s moved down a little and/or is stretching out.

So basically still thinking I’ve got at least 2 weeks to go.

Preparations for Lady Jr: Less for Lady Jr, more for us at this point. We have two freezer meals prepped and frozen and a handful lined up for next weekend. I am making a shiite ton of gluten-free pumpkin granola for snacks. We washed the cloth diapers that we ordered & received, so those are ready. We practiced our diaper folding skills and I think we both have a basic understanding of how to do it now. I put a few more things into the hospital bag (chap stick, hair tie, lotion…).

We had a tour of the hospital last Thursday. It was very helpful – now when I think about What Is to Come, I have a real place I can picture. It has everything I hoped for for a hospital birth – private room, birth ball, private shower, squat bar, adjustable lights and thermostat, space to walk around, and readily available drugs. My birth plan is pretty simple – stay mobile, avoid drugs unless the pain is stalling things or unbearable, stay flexible – and the hospital seems pretty in line with all that. I just don’t want to feel like I’m being forced into anything or having my agency taken away and they don’t seem like the kind of place that would do that.

Exercise: More walking. Lots of walking. We had a friend visiting for the week and we went on a lot of Pokewalks with her, which was awesome. I also did a little lifting, although it’s definitely slowing down even more. I’m trying to just get in a few air squats here and there throughout the day and stay mobile.

Appointments: One last Thursday. Everything’s still fine. I forgot to ask about my Group B Strep test from the week before and they didn’t say anything. Probably fine? Of course, now I checked their online portal and there’s… nothing… so. Hmm. Oof, and I made the mistake of looking at my weight. Blrgh.

Another this Thursday. Appointments all the Thursdays!

Dr Lady: I’ve started her on a few strength exercises to slowly ease her back into lifting and make her ankle stronger. If it weren’t for her toenail, she’d be walking longer distances. But alas, that’s devolving quickly. She saw the doctor for it and now she’s going to go see a podiatrist. I only hope they can do something in the next week because man, we do not want to be fucking around with foot problems after Lady Jr arrives.

Otherwise, still nesting, still trying to get as much done as she can, in lab and at home. She got the TDAP shot last week and suffered a mild fever for her valiant effort. Now she is up to date on all of her vaccines, though.  Woo!
