About

november-50I’m Kai, a thirty-something writer, reader, and photographer. This blog has come a long way from it’s Crossfit and diet roots, from a journey through the Autoimmune Protocol, to cataloging our two-year TTC rollercoaster, to finally (but not actually finally, never finally) our journey into parenthood.

I – Speck or occasionally Kai – am a work-at-home mother who balances her day job with her book deadline with her baby with two cats with keeping the house from descending into chaos with somehow, also, weightlifting.

My wife – Dr Lady – is a microbiologist currently working as a postdoc studying viruses – specifically the kind that pray on bacteria (see: basteriophages).

Our daughter – Lady Jr – is a ball of delight who has her mother’s eyes and her mother’s stubborn streak.

So yeah. That’s us. Welcome.

  1. Hello, i stumbled on your blog looking for whole 30 reviews and just want to say thank you for all your blog post. I’m starting the whole 30 in January! Also I see your a photographer, do you have a separate blog for you images? Thank you and can’t wait to read more of your post!

    • Hi and thanks! I used to have a separate photo blog, but that went the way of websites-never-again-updated, so now I keep most of my photos on flickr and share them here when applicable.
How did your Whole30 go? Do you have a personal blog?

I found this blog after stumbling across your LJ while reading “A Day in the Life” entries. I’m really glad I did! I myself am very interested in DIY, cooking, books (sci-fi is a favourite genre of mine as well), and am intrigued by the paleo diet. I look forward to seeing more posts from you.

  3. I stumbled on this blog via Whole9. Loved your post about what it’s like to live with anxiety. I have had similar success with anxiety just falling away from my life except in exceptional circumstances or food mishaps. What sparked me to read more though is that you spent a summer in Russia?! Jealous! So very much jealous. Have you written/blogged about this extended visit anywhere? I would love to read about it. I spent 2.5 weeks visiting with a friend in Moscow and the surrounding countryside in 2010 realizing a lifelong dream to visit there.

  4. Very cool blog, looking forward to reading more from you. 🙂

Hello from NYC! I’m a 38 yr old lesbian, hardcore paleo, and my partner and I are TTC AND actively looking for the perfect homesteading location. I think the 4 of us could be BFFs. Look forward to following your journeys.

  6. haha, I also nominated you for the OLBA. No pressure, but thanks for writing! http://inthebabycloset.wordpress.com/2014/10/06/one-lovely-blog-award/
